Allelic richness and diversity in global composite collection and reference sets in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)
Chickpea is the fourth largest grain legume crop globally. A composite collection of 3000 accessions was formed and genotyped using 50 SSR markers. The accessions were also field evaluated for seven qualitative traits. Analysis of 48 SSR markers data on 2915 accessions detected 1683 alleles, of which 935 were rare and 748 common. Gene diversity varied from 0.533 to 0.975. Kabuli chickpea as a group were genetically more diverse than other seed types. Several group-specific unique alleles were detected: 104 in Kabuli, 297 in desi, and 69 in wild Cicer; 114 each in West Asia and Mediterranean, 117 in South and South East Asia, and 10 in African region accessions. A genotype-based reference set captured 1315 alleles compared to 1237 alleles in the reference set based on qualitative traits or 1354 alleles based on SSRs and qualitative traits data. The relative usefulness of these reference sets in chickpea breeding and genomics studies are being further investigated
Realistic Equations of State for the Primeval Universe
Early universe equations of state including realistic interactions between
constituents are built up. Under certain reasonable assumptions, these
equations are able to generate an inflationary regime prior to the
nucleosynthesis period. The resulting accelerated expansion is intense enough
to solve the flatness and horizon problems. In the cases of curvature parameter
\kappa equal to 0 or +1, the model is able to avoid the initial singularity and
offers a natural explanation for why the universe is in expansion.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures. Citations added in this version. Accepted EPJ
Patient endothelial colony-forming cells to model coronary artery disease susceptibility and unravel the role of dysregulated mitochondrial redox signalling
Mechanisms involved in the individual susceptibility to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) beyond traditional risk factors are poorly understood. Here, we describe the utility of cultured patient-derived endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) in examining novel mechanisms of CAD susceptibility, particularly the role of dysregulated redox signalling. ECFCs were selectively cultured from peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 828 patients from the BioHEART-CT cohort, each with corresponding demographic, clinical and CT coronary angiographic imaging data. Spontaneous growth occurred in 178 (21.5%) patients and was more common in patients with hypertension (OR 1.45 (95% CI 1.03–2.02), p = 0.031), and less likely in patients with obesity (OR 0.62 [95% CI 0.40–0.95], p = 0.027) or obstructive CAD (stenosis > 50%) (OR 0.60 [95% CI 0.38–0.95], p = 0.027). ECFCs from patients with CAD had higher mitochondrial production of superoxide (O2 −–MitoSOX assay). The latter was strongly correlated with the severity of CAD as measured by either coronary artery calcium score (R2 = 0.46; p = 0.0051) or Gensini Score (R2 = 0.67; p = 0.0002). Patient-derived ECFCs were successfully cultured in 3D culture pulsatile mini-vessels. Patient-derived ECFCs can provide a novel resource for discovering mechanisms of CAD disease susceptibility, particularly in relation to mitochondrial redox signalling.Marie Besnier, Meghan Finemore, Christine Yu, Katharine A. Why doesn’t Jane protect her privacy?
End-to-end encryption has been heralded by privacy and security researchers as an effective defence against dragnet surveillance, but there is no evidence of widespread end-user uptake. We argue that the non-adoption of end-to-end encryption might not be entirely due to usability issues identified by Whitten and Tygar in their seminal paper “Why Johnny Can’t Encrypt”. Our investigation revealed a number of fundamental issues such as incomplete threat models, misaligned incentives, and a general absence of understanding of the email architecture. From our data and related research literature we found evidence of a number of potential explanations for the low uptake of end-to-end encryption. This suggests that merely increasing the availability and usability of encryption functionality in email clients will not automatically encourage increased deployment by email users. We shall have to focus, first, on building comprehensive end-user mental models related to email, and email security. We conclude by suggesting directions for future research
Lattice QCD in the epsilon-regime and random matrix theory
In the epsilon-regime of QCD the main features of the spectrum of the
low-lying eigenvalues of the (euclidean) Dirac operator are expected to be
described by a certain universality class of random matrix models. In
particular, the latter predict the joint statistical distribution of the
individual eigenvalues in any topological sector of the theory. We compare some
of these predictions with high-precision numerical data obtained from lattice
QCD for a range of lattice spacings and volumes. While no complete matching is
observed, the results agree with theoretical expectations at volumes larger
than about 5 fm^4.Comment: Plain TeX source, 17 pages, figures included, minor changes in tables

The Boundary-spanning Role of Democratic Learning Communities: Implementing the IDEALS
This multi-case study investigates characteristics and practices in schools that expand the traditional boundaries of school leadership and transform schools into democratic learning communities based on the level of implementation of the IDEALS framework. This investigation serves as a modus to illuminate democratic processes that change schools and address the needs of the students, not the needs of the adults in the system. A sample of five purposefully selected high schools, from the Midwest USA, was utilized. The schools serve Grade 9—12 students, but vary in size, residential area and socioeconomic status of the students. This study illuminates some of the challenges and strategies that facilitate or impede the process of creating more democratic schools that expand the boundaries of inquiry and discourse to include a broader range of community stakeholders and that respect and embrace issues of equity.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
